Great Songs To Learn On Guitar.. For Beginners

Many people get put off learning to play guitar because of the price of lessons, however to play some of your favourite and some of the best songs ever.. you will not need to pay for lessons. You can learn from the comfort of your own room.

There are many songs that have only 4 simple chords to the whole song, and it's easy to learn them.. I started this way myself.

Ultimate Guitar is a fantastic website for finding the chords to whatever track you wish to play, and will also show you how to play the chords, which is very useful. You will only need 2 things, an acoustic guitar and a capo (you can find these for no more than £10 on the internet or at music shops).

I have tried to include a mix of songs, whether indie, alternative, pop or any other genre as it is good to play a wide variety of tunes.

The Libertines- Music When The Lights Go Out

The first song I ever learnt to play on the guitar. It takes a while to get used to playing the chords combinations, as this has a couple of tough chords for beginners in the chorus, but stick with it.. it's a track that will make your Nan cry and make a girl's heart melt.

Chords

C, Em, Am, Dm, G (Verse)

F(Barre Chord), G(Barre Chord), F#(Barre Chord) (Chorus)

Katy Perry- Teenage dream

Another song to sing to the ladies, the acoustic version of Katy Perry's Teenage Dream is a simple, yet great sounding sound to play that nearly everyone will have heard!

Chords (Capo on 3)

G, D, Em, C (Verse and Chorus)

Em, G, Em, C (Pre Chorus)

You Me At Six- Stay With Me

This is a superb, ambient twist on the track by YMAS and was a B-side to the electric version of the song.

This is simply 3 chords for the whole song..

Chords

Dm, C, Bb (Verse and Chorus)

Oasis- Half The World Away

Too many people seem to think that the only Oasis track you can learn is Wonderwall, when in fact it is far from their best song.

Half The World Away is a great sing a long track, including the famous clap.. have a go.

Chords (Capo on 2)

C, F, E, Am (Verse)

C, F, E, Am, D, G (Chorus)

The Beatles- Twist And Shout

An absolute classic that everyone from your grandparents to your little brother will know.

The upbeat tune and "Wooos" are sure to get everyone around you smiling.

Chords

A7, D, G (Verse and Chorus)

These are all simple songs to learn on acoustic guitar, and only have a few chords (Music When The Lights Out being the most complex) but stick with them and it will pay off!

If people like this, I am happy to make another with more songs!

  1. I don't mean this to sound rude, but the chords are wrong for Stay With Me: it should be a Bb, not a B...
Also, Twist and Shout goes D, A, G for most of it, and the verse of Half The World Away is only C and F..

    1. I second that, it should be a Bb

  2. Teenage Dream doesn't sound right, I think it's off... What tuning do you use?

  3. Sorry I do apologise, it is Bb.. Typo, I will change it.

Twist and Shout and Half The World Away chords were taken from Ultimate Guitar! Just the way I play them.

Teenage Dream is capo on 3, standard tuning.
